A Day in the Life
The excitement of jetting off to the other side of the world is something Afiqah gets to experience every week as a flight attendant with Finnair. When she is not up in the sky, she is on the ground, exploring the streets of Singapore. An interesting twist of balancing between takeoffs and deliveries. As a flight attendant, Afiqah flies to Finland weekly, and whenever she is not flying off to the other side of the world, she drives with Lalamove to deliver items across Singapore.
Her day-to-day tasks include ensuring the safety of her passengers and delivering exceptional service at 30,000 feet up in the air. When she is not up in the sky, Afiqah is on the ground performing her second role as a Lalamove driver partner.
Q: How did your journey with Lalamove start?
A: I fly here and then and have a few off days, so I was thinking what I can do that is flexible where I can work on my own time. The idea came to my mind when I realised that whenever I shop online, most of the delivery drivers work with Lalamove. I was intrigued about their job, so I asked them how it works. 3 months ago, I decided to try it because it is flexible, and I enjoy it because I get to work whenever I am free and get to keep myself active and healthy as I move around constantly when delivering to different places.
Empowerment in Balancing Two Roles
As glamorous as it is to be a flight attendant, the job can be as demanding as it is glamorous. The flexibility of being a Lalamove driver partner allows Afiqah to have the opportunity to earn extra income while still being in control of her time and goals. Lalamove has become an integral part of Afiqah’s life, offering her a side hustle to work whenever she is not flying off to Finland.
Q: How often do you deliver with Lalamove?
A: In a week, I would usually be away for 4 to 5 days, so I would have 2-3 off days. Once I am back in Singapore from flying, I would rest the next day and then proceed to deliver with Lalamove the following day so that I can earn extra cash. I usually try to work from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm and have breaks in between. Whenever I am on shift, I get this momentum of wanting to do more after each completed order, and I will only stop when I am feeling tired.
Aviating in a Male-Dominated Industry
Afiqah’s journey is a real-life example of resilience and ambition, a woman who is determined not to be limited by traditional roles. Q: Do you find it tiring to deliver, especially bigger items?
A: It can be tiring as I would need to collect and deliver the items. However, sometimes people are willing to help me to carry the items to my car, which is nice to know. I recently bought a foldable trolley that can be easily stored in my car, which helps to lessen the weight for me whenever I have to deliver heavy items. As my vehicle type is a car, most of the items are not super big or extremely heavy for me, as there is a weight and size limit for car orders.
