How to Pack Items for Delivery

When you book a delivery, the journey starts long before the driver arrives. It starts with how you pack your items. At Lalamove, we handle door-to-door delivery. We move your items from point A to point B quickly and reliably. Packing, however, stays in your hands. The way you pack directly affects whether your items arrive safely or damaged.

This guide walks you through practical steps you can follow to protect your items and avoid unnecessary loss.

Start With the Right Materials

Strong packing begins with the right tools. Don’t improvise here. Use:

  • Sturdy cardboard boxes that hold their shape

  • Bubble wrap or foam for cushioning

  • Packing paper or newspaper to fill gaps

  • Strong packing tape that seals tightly

  • Labels or markers to mark fragile items

Avoid weak boxes, thin plastic bags, or reused packaging that already shows wear. A damaged box almost always leads to damaged items.

Choose the Right Box Size

Match the box to the item. This sounds simple, but most damage happens because of poor sizing.

  • Use small boxes for heavy items like books or tools

  • Use medium or large boxes for lighter, bulky items

  • Leave just enough space for cushioning, not empty air

An oversized box lets items shift during movement. A tight box puts pressure on the contents. Both create risk.

Wrap Each Item Properly

Never place items directly into a box without protection.

  • Wrap fragile items individually with bubble wrap

  • Use multiple layers for glass, ceramics, or electronics

  • Secure the wrapping with tape so it doesn’t come loose

If items touch each other inside the box, they can collide during transit. Wrapping each piece prevents that.

Fill Every Empty Space

After placing items in the box, check for gaps. Fill all empty spaces with:

  • Crumpled paper

  • Foam peanuts

  • Soft cloth or towels

Shake the box lightly. If you feel movement, add more padding. A tightly packed box keeps everything stable during the ride.

Seal the Box Securely

Don’t underestimate sealing. A poorly sealed box can open during handling.

  • Use strong packing tape

  • Seal all openings, including edges

  • Reinforce the bottom of the box for heavy items

Apply pressure to ensure the tape sticks firmly. A secure seal keeps the structure intact.

Label Clearly and Honestly

Clear labeling helps the driver handle your items with care.

  • Mark boxes as “Fragile” when needed

  • Add “This Side Up” for items that require upright positioning

  • Include contact details if necessary

Don’t overuse fragile labels. Use them where they truly matter so they carry meaning.

Final Check Before Pickup

Before the driver arrives, run a quick check:

  • Are all boxes sealed properly?

  • Do items feel secure inside?

  • Did you label fragile items clearly?

This last step can save you from costly mistakes.
