From Legends to Mooncakes: How to Celebrate This Mid-Autumn Festival in Singapore

featured image

The moon shines the brightest and roundest, and families come together to celebrate the harvesting of their crops by giving mooncakes and watching the moon.

Ever wonder what is the history behind the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival? It goes back to over 3,000 years ago. It originated in China where people started to worship the moon on the same day every year to thank the moon in return for receiving “harvest-giving light”. It eventually guided the farming schedule as people believed that worshipping the moon every year, could bring good harvests for their crops.

The celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival gradually was seen across other regions in Asia as Chinese people migrated over the years.

Did you know that Chang’e and a rabbit are associated with the moon harvesting festival?

One popular belief is that Chang’e, a moon goddess had drank an elixir of immortality to prevent it from falling into evil hands. The white jade rabbit pitied her and flew to the moon to keep her company on the moon. There is a debate on whether Chang’e’s fate was a punishment or a reward.

In current times, people still celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival to foster family reunions and pray for good health and wealth for their loved ones. What can we do to enjoy the Mid-Autumn Festival this year in Singapore?
