Preparation Before Wrapping

Most people would jump straight into wrapping a bouquet, but there are a few steps before that. Choose a main flower as the base, usually either lilies or roses, as they are available all year round. Side flowers to go with the main flowers to add more texture are usually eustoma, ferns, and eucalyptus leaves. One of the key steps in preparation is to remove the leaves and thorns from the stems, from the binding point or below.

TIPS: Use a flower thorn and leaf remover tool instead of your hands, and do not remove the 3 guard petals around the roses to prevent fast blooming.

For side flowers such as eustoma, they are delicate and fragile, especially the stems. They are perfect as side flowers because they come in different colours and it is available all year round. As for the eucalyptus leaves, choose a longer length to work with. Measure the binding point and strip off the extra leaves.

TIPS: Instead of throwing away the excess leaves, store them in a bag and use them as a natural refresher for your rooms or toilets.

Lastly, to ensure that the flowers have a longer vase life, you can add flower preservatives or flower food into the water. The flowers need to be soaked in the preserved water for at least 2 hours before taking them out.

How to Build a Bouquet using the Spiral Technique🌹

You will need:

  • Fresh flowers (main flowers and fillers)
  • Scissors and tape
  • Wrapping paper
  • Ribbon
  • A clean and flat work table

Step 1: Preparing your flowers

Remove all excess leaves and thorns from the flower stems and trim them at a certain angle for better water absorption. Plan and group the flowers by wrapping the fillers around the main flower.

Step 2: Layering the flowers

Start by holding the first flower in your non-dominant hand as an anchor. Take the second flower and place it diagonally across the first flower so the stems form an X shape. As you continue to add new stems, rotate the bouquet very lightly in your hand in a clockwise motion.

Keep building by layering the flowers and fillers around the bouquet until it creates a spiral pattern shaped like a dome. Once done, soak the bottom of the stems with damp cotton wool to keep the flowers fresh.

Step 3: Wrapping a Bouquet

Cut the wrapping paper in half, create a diagonal fold and place the flowers above the fold. Wrap the first side tightly and securely with tape underneath the stems. Fold the opposite side over the first one by overlapping it slightly, and tape it. Lastly, fold the bottom edge of the paper around the stems for a cleaner look to conceal the damp cotton wool. End it off with a ribbon in the middle of the bouquet.
