The Story of Shaun Yeo: A Journey Through Darkness Into Light

At Lalamove, every driver partner bears a different story, struggles and journeys beyond more than just delivering packages. Behind the wheel, they steer through the streets while projecting dedication and hard work to deliver solutions to many people every day.

With such privilege, we were able to sit down and have a conversation with Shaun Yeo, a seasoned Lalamove driver partner for the last four years; whose story exemplifies the essence of determination, courage and self-discipline.

Early Life in Growing Up

Shaun grew up with his aunt, whom he views as his mother and lived with her until he turned 12. Following this, Shaun moved back to live with his biological father. His father cared for him, but he was too caught up in pursuing money—driven by the fear of scarcity which led to repudiating the responsibilities of parenthood. Although Shaun’s father made an effort to spend time with him, their moments together were far from wholesome.

The Journey to Addiction

Such a rugged childhood was ingrained in Shaun, causing him a deep-seated sense of inferiority that followed him through his teenage years. The constant reminder of inadequacy clung to Shaun which ultimately led him to join an unsolicited organisation and begin experimenting with illegal substances. At just 15, Shaun was caught by the police for unlawful activities, resulting in serving probation. Within a short period, he faced legal trouble again for rioting, which landed him in prison for two years at just 17. During these two years, he managed to obtain his O levels.

The most difficult moment of Shaun’s struggles was not being there for his children. As his dependence lingered, he would prioritise fueling his addiction instead of providing more than just the bare minimum essentials for his children. As Shaun talked about his past, he reflected and began to realise the unfairness he had inflicted on his children.

“I brought them to this world so I think I must be responsible for them, I must try my best every day for them,” Shaun said.

A Turning Point in Life

It was only during Shaun’s last incarceration, he morosely contemplated that he needed to change for good. Shaun credited God and his children for waking him up as he began to experience the negative ripple effects of his addiction.

Shaun has made a commitment not only to his loved ones but also to himself to never go back to the old ways again. A piece of advice that keeps him away from his harrowing experiences is, “Change has to come from yourself because if you were to change for somebody, the change will not last.”

Living with Regrets

Tragically, Shaun’s late father was diagnosed with colon cancer and passed on shortly while Shaun was still imprisoned. One of Shaun’s regrets is not being there for his late father during his last moments. For years, Shaun wondered what might have happened if he had taken the first plea and been there during his late father’s final days.

Path to New Beginnings

Despite achieving financial success as a real estate agent, Shaun relapsed; neglecting his children in much the same way his parents did. He was too buried in his addiction, he lost his grip on freedom. While others in similar situations might have stayed away from temptation due to the fear of losing everything, Shaun’s past dominated his future—causing him to run against the end of the tunnel.

Twenty years later, Shaun was determined to break the cycles of his generational traumas.

Today, Shaun may not reach the same peaks as his real estate moments, but he has found a deeper acuity of happiness. Determined to work harder for those who matter the most to him, he strives to save for his children and always be the best version of himself every day.
